I am drawn towards weathered signage, discarded notes, and abandoned sketches and objects that provide insight about the person and society from which it came. For me, there is something uniquely striking in the chipped paint and faded images of abandoned billboards and brick walls. In an attempt to capture this deteriorated reflection of individuals and society I have formed a technique using industrial grade vinyl, acrylic paint, silk-screens, and canvas.
The first step in this process is to create images and color-ways on two pieces of vinyl. Since the vinyl used is transparent, all screen-printing, painting, etc. must be applied in reverse. Each piece of vinyl is then cut into strips of various sizes. The vinyl strips are then woven into and stretched over a canvas frame. Once this is done numerous coats of acrylic paint are applied. Next, these coats are sanded to achieve texture and dimension so that where the paint wears away the original vinyl image appears.
